Topic 3 ยท Binding and page count

Smyth sewn (hardcover)

The short answerThe most common binding for offset-printed hardcover books: very durable, with a printable spine.

The details

The binding wraps completely around the book block and allows for a printable spine. Used for hardcover books, sketchbooks, planners and journals.

Page count for this binding

  • Do not count covers or endsheets (the heavier paper glued to the inside covers).
  • Page 1 starts on the right, facing the loose endsheet. The last page lands on the left.
  • Page count must be divisible by 4.
  • No real maximum, but you need enough pages for a spine. The count depends on the book: a children's book might be 16 pages, a journal or planner 100 to 300.

Best for

Children's picture books, cookbooks, art books, hardcover journals.
