Perfect-sewn (softcover)
The details
The preferred binding for graphic novels, trade paperbacks, softcover children's books and colouring books. Softcover cover stock is 10pt to 18pt, mostly 10 to 14pt.
MCRL calls this perfect-sewn, not "perfect bound": perfect bound is glued only with no sewing, and MCRL does not offer it.
Page count for this binding
48 pages minimum, and the count must be divisible by 4.
Best for
Novels, graphic novels, softcover children's books, colouring books.
Common questions
Is perfect sewn just glued?
No. Unlike perfect bound, which is only glued, perfect sewn means the printed page signatures (folded sections of pages) are first sewn together with thread and then glued into a flexible softcover or paperback spine. MCRL does not print perfect bound books, which are only glued. Pages that are only glued can fall out over time, and sewn pages will not.
Can I add gilded edges to a perfect sewn book?
You can, but gilding works best on book blocks with Smyth-sewn binding, where the pages form a solid, even edge.
How long does production take for a perfect sewn book?
Production alone runs roughly two weeks for saddle-stitched and perfect-sewn books. The entire process is 8 to 12 weeks from approval of your physical proof to delivery.
