Pre-printing checklist

The short answerSignificant time, frustration and money can be saved by checking off 3 things before going to print (with us or another printer): hire a graphic designer or book formatter, get a couple of quotes, and book a follow-up call.

The details

1. Hire a graphic designer or book formatter

Bringing a designer or book formatter experienced with the Adobe Suite into your project early saves significant time and prevents costly rework when preparing files for print. A publishing professional will lay out your content according to your vision, recommend colour and typography, and design unique features that enhance your book. Need design help? Our Hire a Pro page lists trusted professionals recommended by our clients.

2. Get a couple of quotes

We recommend requesting quotes from 2 to 3 experienced printers. Ask peers in your industry for recommendations on local and overseas printers, so you can compare price, timeline and quality. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples: understand what is and isn't included in each printer's quote.

To give you an accurate quote, a printer needs to know:

  • Finished page size
  • Inside page count
  • Paper weight
  • Type of binding
  • Hardcover or softcover
  • Cover material
  • Unique features and any add-ons

3. Book a follow-up call

Book a one-on-one call with your potential printers. It's a great way to test their responsiveness, patience and knowledge, and you will be working closely with your printing partner. Quite often we have ideas and features clients hadn't considered.
