A well-established pen company came to MCRL Overseas Group to source packaging for a new pen line. What they asked for was a slightly more stylish replica of the traditional pen box they had been using for decades. Because pens are a low-margin item, they assumed a genuinely modern box was out of reach on cost.

Rather than quote the request as stated, MCRL looked at the pen brand itself - which had been repositioned to a more youthful audience - and researched current raw materials and design options that fitted the new positioning. Instead of another plastic hinged moulded box, the solution was a design with a magnetised lid that snaps closed, in a soft-touch leatherette with a cork finish for durability. That material choice also enabled embossing the new pen logo into the lid, which raised the branding and the perceived value in one move.

The commercial outcome is the part worth remembering. Because the new design required no moulding fee - the fixed tooling cost that a moulded plastic box carries - the finished packaging looked more expensive but actually cost less than the box it replaced. For a recognition gift, that matters twice over: the value of the pen and the gift both rise while the company’s costs fall. The general lesson is to brief the outcome you want rather than the product you think you can afford, because the cost structure of an alternative construction is often nothing like the one you are used to.
