How the MAGIC Journal was printed and bound

Key takeaways

  • MAGIC is a daily morning method - meditation, affirmations, gratitude, intentions, coffee.
  • The journal is 6″ x 8″, 200 pages, spiral bound, with rose gold and gold foil.
  • 80lb (120gsm) offset stock printed 4-colour both sides prevents ink bleed-through.
  • Speaking to an existing client is the strongest way to vet a printer before ordering.

Natalee Linez founded Magic Mornings, a journaling method built on positive psychology research. MAGIC is an acronym - meditation, affirmations, gratitude, intentions and coffee - done daily to set up a productive and mindful day. She created it during the 2020 pandemic while looking for structure, worked through other people’s morning routines, and arrived at her own. When friends started using it too, she decided to turn the method into a physical journal.

The specification: a hardcover journal with rose gold and gold foil detailing, spiral bound, 6″ x 8″, 200 pages with full colour printing throughout. Interior stock is 80lb offset - around 120gsm - printed four colour on both sides. She singles out paper weight in the video, describing it as not the thickest option but not the thinnest, which is exactly the right call for a colour journal: heavy enough to stop ink showing through, light enough to keep the book from becoming a brick.

She also describes how she chose the printer, which is the more useful part for anyone at that stage. She found MCRL through reviews on Facebook, then went further and contacted another creator who had printed journals with us to ask directly about quality before committing. Talking to an existing client is the single best due-diligence step available when you’re choosing a manufacturer sight unseen.

Common Questions

What paper weight stops ink showing through?
80lb offset (about 120gsm) is our common recommendation for full-colour journals - substantial enough to prevent bleed-through without making the book unnecessarily heavy.
Can a spiral-bound journal have a hardcover?
Yes. Spiral and Wire-O binding both work with hardcovers, and the pages lie completely flat - which is why they suit journals and planners people write in daily.
Can I get rose gold foil rather than standard gold?
You can. Foil is available in a wide range of metallic and pigmented finishes, including rose gold, copper, silver and custom colours.
Can I speak to an existing client before ordering?
Many of our clients are happy to be asked, and our client stories page lists creators who’ve shared their experience publicly. Ask us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
